God Only Knows
When all else fails and we cannot find a way to explain something, we simply say “God only knows.” Although this expression is often spoken out of frustration, it profoundly defines a great truth about life and God: there are some things God only knows. No one else knows, no one else can explain, no one else understands. Essentially, we find ourselves continually seeking answers and explanations to circumstances and situations which are beyond our understanding. There are some things God only knows, and He chooses to keep it that way!
Isaiah described this phenomenon in God’s words like this: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
One of the greatest challenges of life is the ability to acknowledge that sometimes… God only knows… the who’s… the what for’s… the when’s… the where’s… the why’s… the how’s. It is at times when questions outnumber answers that we must follow the advice of Solomon: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). God only requires that we trust him rather than have an explanation for the great questions of life.
The best news is you do not have to know everything, you do not have to understand everything; God knows everything and that is what matters. He does not have to tell us everything! In some matters, it might even be best that God only knows! Some things are too complicated for us to handle.
Job, the greatest man of the East, offered this assessment in the middle of his great trial: “Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:8-10). Job was seeking answers but ultimately left it in the hands of a just God. Only God knew what the future held for Job. Job’s end was twice as blessed as his beginning.
No matter what tests and trials you go through, no matter what injustices and tragedies you may face that you cannot figure out, rest in the solace of the old saying… GOD ONLY KNOWS! What a comforting thought that God knows. If only God alone knows, that’s all that matters anyway. As long as God knows, He can do more about the situation than anyone else. He has all power in Heaven and earth, He is the creator of the universe, He is the life-giver, He is our provider, healer, and miracle worker; whatever we need, God has promised to do it! As long as God knows everything will turn out fine!
God only knows. Trust Him with all your heart. He knows the way!
